System Dynamics

We tend to marvel at movies and film. Ironically, someone has 1) already cashed in on the term ‘marvel’ and 2) also changed the way we think about that word and the motivations behind it. Personally, I really don’t like Marvel movies because they tend to be predictable; their system is one that works for them for whatever reason; creative purposes, interests in superheros and probably also support their basic physiological needs. Within the realm of the Marvel franchise, people are drawn toward its creation by its capability to capture an audience. Those that act, produce, write, direct and love watching movies are all a part of this realm. Looking at this interconnected system at a broader view are also those that further create meaning out of its existence; retail, public relations, transportation, designers and many more are coerced by their idea, ultimately contributing to our end goal of human advancement. Our/Your decisions change the world, give it more information and influence the next decision.

Is it more important to be or to become? In order to be, we must first become, by trial and error, practice and simply making habits of our ability to “do.” The world is only going to get better if we allow it to, something as easily done by taking note of what has happened in the past.

What I have learned as a mere 21 year old girl growing up combatting and internalizing two different identities is that making things work is about effort, and whether we want to put in the effort or not can be the solution or hinderance in advancing. Feedback loops are the real-time outcomes of our decisions affecting our future endeavors to try and try again or move on.

The larger the effect a decision has, the more risk is involved in attempting to have it succeed. We must always ask ourselves why we are doing something so that we do not lose track of our end goals.

In relation to everyday life, we must try and make our present better so that our future has something to work with when unexpectedness comes knocking at our door. This is the mission of those who work in the present moment, of whom also have a tool belt of past knowledge wrapped around their brain the moment they need to reflect, reassess and recapture the meaning of their work. If it was that easy, everyone would do it. Get insight that inspires difference and captures effectiveness.

  • Structure generates behavior

  • Turn information into action

  • Mental models are important, but not enough to excite real, lasting change structurally, informationally and incentively

  • Instead of putting all of your energy into blaming and shaming a system of events, do your due diligence to find solutions.

“The model is not the real system, only reality is.” - John Sternman
